Spook Walk 2011

Every year our community holds the annual Spook Walk.   It’s sort of like a haunted house would be set up in a park, except without the scary parts.  Community businesses come together for a safe, kid-friendly environment to have some Halloween fun.  Each business has a “booth” of sorts with a theme.  This year had Alice in Wonderland, Wizard of Oz, Five Little Monkeys (Jumping on the Bed) and so on.  Kids get to dress up in their costumes and make their rounds collecting candy and other goodies. 

This attracts A LOT of little kids because you don’t have to take your very young child out in the neighborhood on Halloween night. 

Xander got all dressed up in his Spiderman costume and he was set.  We lined up early.  It started at 5:30pm and we were there by 4:30pm or so.  Last year we didn’t go until 5:30 and we were lined up way at the back  - stood in line for a couple hours and didn’t get through the Walk until it was dark out.  This year was better.

Xander was such a good boy in line.  He loved watching the other kids in costume and although he walked around a bit and strayed here and there, he behaved so well and was so polite going through the Walk, telling everyone thank you.  He caught on to the “open your bag and they’ll give you something” thing pretty quick.  And he even gave a couple hugs that night! 

Near the end was the Fire Department and the Fire Dog was in attendance.  Xander was pretty enamored by that.  He had a really hard time waiting his turn to say hello. 

We finished the Walk with plenty of light left, and only an hour and half spent in lines and going through to collect the goodies.  Xander really wanted to go down the slide (we were at a park) when we were finished.

I don’t think he expected it to be so fast!

Then a ride on Daddy’s shoulders on the way back to the car. 

He’s still a bit young to really appreciate and enjoy the costumes and the candy.  We know he’ll be using his costume at home on days other than Halloween.  We were pretty surprised he wanted to wear the mask, but he really seems to enjoy the whole thing. 

On Halloween night, we’ll be taking Xander around our neighborhood, just the block or so we live on, and then over to Grandma & Papas house to say hello. 

It was fun to join in an activity where we could focus on Xander.  Only a couple more weeks and that little sister of his while arrive!
